Human Trafficking Detection Training
This program consists of a four-part video series intended to support Professional Drivers in detecting human trafficking in the transportation industry, led by survivors of human trafficking.
WHMIS
WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) provides health and safety details on hazardous products in Canadian workplaces. This online course is for employees handling, using, or storing such materials.
There are literally hundreds of laws, regulations, policies and standards that govern the trucking industry in Canada and that have a direct impact on the daily operation of your company, you and your drivers.
This program, and the other courses assigned by your THRSC Atlantic Advisor, offers you a basic overview of the most common laws governing the trucking industry. Understanding the laws that govern your daily operations and offering guidance and support to your drivers is a fundamental competency within the dispatch function.
Whether you deal directly with the external client or assist internal customers, what you do in the dispatch function has an enormous impact on the type of customer service your company provides. There are 5 specific tasks within the dispatch function, based upon the General Areas of Competency (GAC) as defined in the National Occupational Standard for Dispatchers, that a competent dispatcher must do in order to service clients efficiently. These tasks include: • Prepare customer orders and requests. • Ensure customer satisfaction. • Reply to inquiries from internal and external customers. • Manage conflict and issues that arise; and • Assist in cultivating business opportunities among existing and potential clients. The courses included in this program, as well as any other courses assigned by your THRSC Atlantic Advisor, will help you increase your proficiency at Customer Service within the dispatch function.
Often referred to as foundational or supportive competencies, effective communication and interpersonal competencies are a vital part of the dispatch function. How well you master these competencies is a determining factor on how well you can perform in functional competencies such as servicing customers and managing human resources. Without being able to communicate effectively or demonstrate exceptional interpersonal competencies, your success in functional competencies will be limited.
According to the National Occupational Standard there are 8 (eight) specific tasks within the dispatch function that a competent dispatcher must undertake in order to communicate and demonstrate interpersonal competencies effectively. These tasks include: • Apply active listening techniques • Select the medium of communication that is appropriate • Provide clear and concise information, explanation and instruction • Write in a clear and concise manner • Apply effective negotiation and conflict resolution techniques • Demonstrate people skills • Work as a member of a team • Exercise leadership in a team context
The courses included in this program, as well as any other courses assigned by your THRSC Atlantic Advisor, will help you demonstrate your proficiency with your communication and interpersonal skills.
Personal competencies are foundational competencies that have a direct impact on how well you perform your functional competencies. For example, to plan trips well within the dispatch function you should know how to solve problems and make decisions effectively. In order to comply with laws, you must be able to demonstrate situational awareness. Finally, to service customers effectively you will have to exercise initiative and resourcefulness.
In this Learning Resource Package, we will explore personal competencies that contribute to the dispatch function. Understanding your personal competencies will allow you to be more self-aware of your emotions and the impact they have upon yourself and others. Once you understand your own personal competencies, you can manage or control them to help in your day-to-day activities.

These tasks include: • Demonstrate professionalism & integrity • Exercise initiative & resourcefulness • Pursue continuous learning activities • Manage Time • Work methodically • Manage stress • Demonstrate thoroughness & attention to detail • Solve Problems • Make decisions • Adapt to change • Demonstrate situational awareness • Balance family and work commitments

At the heart of any trucking company is its people. Neither the most sophisticated driver management system nor the most state-of-the-art equipment can operate itself. You need people, and they need to be guided and supported to do their jobs effectively. Dispatchers have a key role to play in effectively managing the day-to-day needs, performance, and compliance of drivers.
According to the National Occupational Standard there are 3 specific tasks within the dispatch function that a competent dispatcher must undertake in order to manage human resources effectively. These tasks include: • Maintain regular communication with drivers; • Monitor drivers; and • Oversee drivers.
The courses included in this program, as well as any other courses assigned by your THRSC Atlantic Advisor, will help you increase your proficiency at managing your human resources within the dispatch function.
Managing information within the dispatch function is a critical component of any trucking company. In fact, the dispatch function requires so much information flow in and out that it can become overwhelming to keep it all straight and ensure relevant personnel have accurate and up-to-date data. As a result, it is vital that anyone within the dispatch function be able to provide and receive clear and concise information, explanation and instruction.
According to the National Occupational Standard there are 3 specific tasks within the dispatch function that a competent dispatcher must do in order to manage information effectively. These tasks include: • Manage Data, • Prepare Reports, and • Utilize various information systems.

Effectively managing material resources is a big part of the dispatch function and a big part of controlling unnecessary costs that can chip away at the bottom line. When you work with drivers and maintenance to ensure safe and reliable equipment, you are helping to reduce mechanical breakdowns and service failures to your customers. When you work with warehouse, dock, and yard personnel, you are utilizing equipment and facilitates and optimizing the movement of freight. When you and your drivers follow freight handling procedures and honor commits to customers you are also ensuring customer satisfaction and retention. All this plays a big part in your company’s profitability.

These tasks include: • Manage commercial and vehicle accessories • Manage shipments of material resources.
The course included in this program, as well as any other courses assigned by your THRSC Atlantic Advisor, will help you increase your proficiency at managing your material resources within the dispatch function.
Planning trips effectively is not just a matter of moving freight from point A to point B. There are variety of factors that a dispatcher needs to take into consideration. These things include type of freight, the route it must travel, as well as the driver and equipment availability and their capabilities. These considerations must be made while trying to balance customer satisfaction, company profitability and driver safety and retention.
